The Terrific Twos!

Two year olds are fabulous little people. Long ago, in the dark ages of education, a two year old classroom would be left to play with "stuff". All day long. Maybe a song here or there, a book or two if they were lucky, some hokey pokey, etc, but it wasn't expected that any teaching really needed to occur in the classroom. After all, they are just two.

But anyone who has/had a two year -- or spent time in the mere vicinity of a two year old -- knows that they are capable of so much more than just playing. Certainly children learn through play, and need independent play throughout their day to develop social and individual strengths and skills, but educating children with a sound curriculum is very important at this age.

Our two year olds experience a wide range of educational skills and opportunities that go deeper than just basic exposure to letters and numbers. While learning the alphabet, and to count, they are also using thinking skills to figure things out through patterns and problem solving. They are given the chance to interact with stories through rich conversation and vocabulary -- and occasionally get the chance to appreciate other languages and cultures through books and activities.

We are working on enhancing the two year curriculum this Spring. While we are not taking away any of the great things already happening in the room, we are adding to the curriculum and adding some new activities in to the daily flow of events. Keep your eyes out around the two year old room for more information!
